Behind The Song - Sitting Pretty

Just a few days ago, I released the next song in my “Singles Project” series. And already, “Sitting Pretty” is the most downloaded song of mine on iTunes! Slow and steady, slow and steady.

I thought I’d write a little about the story behind “Sitting Pretty.” If you have heard the song, you may have noticed that the chorus says “big dick contest” a few times. And come on, any song with that phrase in it has got to have a good story, right?!

I was writing with my producer Neilson and a couple of other talented friends of mine, and I suggested a song idea. I had heard a statistic that the county I live in has some of the biggest houses in the country, and it also has one of the highest rates of debt in the country. (Full disclosure, I am not 100% sure of the stat’s accuracy, but after driving around my town a bit, anyone could see that it could be a very real possibility!)

I continued by asking, “What’s that phrase, where guys pull out their junk and wave it around to see who wins?”

There was an awkward pause, and then Neilson said,

“Big dick contest. It’s called a big dick contest.”

The other writers and me chuckled, and I said, “That’s what I want to write about. We don’t have to actually SAY that, but that’s what I want it to be about.”

So, we started writing. First a melody and chords; then lyrics. When we got to the chorus, we had:

So you got that new house in the city/
_______________that you think you’re winning,
Must be something, sitting pretty…

We were racking our brains about how to finish out that line.

Neilson then started singing “big dick contest” in that line, and it was the smoothest, nicest-sounding fit for the song.

“Why don’t we just say the actual phrase?” I suggested.

“You sure about that?” Neilson said.

“Why not? Who can say they put 'big dick contest' in their song?" I said.

From that point on, “big dick contest” was set in stone, and the rest of the song was completed.

After reading this, if you feel offended, confused, or any other negative emotion due to my incorporation of a phallic phrase, I love you, and...

Take a listen to it here:

1st Franklin House Concert Recap

I had, once again, a MOST incredible time playing another show. A kind, supportive, encouraging environment with which to sing my heart out is more than this girl could ever ask for. Every house show I do, I meet so many more people than I ever have in the traditional venues. I have made more genuine connections and friendships. It's not just a concert, it is a kind and loving adventure. Here are some pictures from it. Thank you to the Grow family for hosting!

StageIt Show Recap!

To say that this show exceeded my expectations would be an understatement of the highest degree.

I was a little skeptical at how it might go, But LET ME TELL YOU, my mind has changed. I was able to interact with my amazing fans in the chat feature throughout the show, and though it took some getting used to, it was one of the coolest things to experience! The folks who tuned in loved it too! I will definitely be doing more of them.

I asked my friends/fans (Frands) to send in some screenshots they took during the show, and here are some of my favorites!

And I had one little bitty Frand who made this sweet letter for me. <3 Love love love.

Thank you again, to all who support me in this crazy adventure. I've got a high hill to climb, but tonight, I will sleep with love in my heart and looking forward to things to come. <3

Girl Crush Cover Video

Last weekend, I recorded a cover video of Little Big Town's newest single, "Girl Crush" with the help of my producer friend Quinn Redmond, my videographer friend Daniel McKinnon, and my husband Bradley Minnigan (the cutie man in the video with me!).  Awhile back, my husband (a diehard country music fan) played the latest Little Big Town "Painkiller" for me. He thought that I would like it. I fell absolutely in LOVE with it! Especially with the song "Girl Crush."  I called up a couple friends, we pulled some money together, and we decided to record my version of it the next day.

As you watch, look for the rain that decided to show up. Raindrops on the guitar, on our faces, everywhere. And look for shivering too, because it was FREEZING!

I hope you enjoy! Please share with your friends, as every play helps tremendously!

Grammy Thinkin'

Look at that thing.
The kid in me is in awe.
The grown-up in me is taking notes.
But the emotional part of me is in longing. Cavernous longing. Tortuous longing.

What a feeling it would be! To make it! To be heard by millions!

That’s not quite my reality.

This is closer to it..

.But hey, you know what? The further I go, the more I think I was created to trudge through the mud. I keep finding myself under rocks and brush and animals. The bruises and the dirt in my fingernails show me I'm making a mark. Do I hope to make it out alive? Ooohhh yes.
But until then, I am so, RIDICULOUSLY thankful for all that I am learning about myself and the world!
